Set within the tranquil surroundings of the Tygerberg Municipal Nursery on the hill-slope looking out towards the Franschhoek, Groot Drakenstein and Hottentots Holland mountains, the Bellville Archery Club has a magnificent setting for an archery range. Though it was back in 1988 when archery was first practiced at this venue, it wasn’t until 1993 when the club was formerly established. Since then, many things have happened: a new range was laid out, tournaments were held, a clubhouse was erected and many honours have been won over the ensuing years as the club grew.
Though archery has been ranked together with the development of speech as the major reason why modem man rose up above the rest of the animal kingdom; it’s survival in a modem technological world is based on far different reasons.
There are not many sports where the whole family can participate together at the same time; where people of differing skill levels can enjoy the sport side by side, without having to be equally matched. This is because each and every archer is engaged in employing their own skills. Enjoyment does not depend on each having to have a similar skill level to make the experience worthwhile.
This is the sport for the individual, where the skills required are Control, Concentration and Mental Strength. If you want to clear your mind, there is little that can do the job as effectively; whether you want to highly competitive, or simply enjoy the sound of the twang of your bowstring out in the open air.
