Individual Competition
1440 (FITA) Round
The athletes shoot 36 arrows at each of the respective distances as per the table below. This means that, in total, 144 arrows are shot. Each archer will shoot each end of 6 arrows within 4 minutes. The distances are usually shot from the longest to the shortest, but these can also be shot in the reverse order (from shorter to longer).

‘720’ Ranking Round
The Olympic or Compound Match rounds are also commonly referred to as a 720 round. This is from the total number of arrows that are shot in this round, two rounds of 36 arrows, from the distance applicable as per the table below. For Recurve the round is actually called the Olympic Round and is shot at 70m (or distance where relevant) on 122cm target faces. For compound the round is called the Compound Match Round and is shot at 50m on an 80cm six ring target face (or other, where applicable).

The Elimination and Final Rounds
For the Elimination Round, archers are seeded according to their positions in the Qualifying Round. They shoot a series of matches in groups, each match consisting of the best of five sets of three arrows for recurve and five ends of three arrows for compound.

The Finals Round, consists of the eight athletes remaining from the Elimination round shooting individual matches, each match consisting of the best of five sets of three arrows for recurve and five ends of three arrows for compound, culminating in the gold Medal match.

Team Competition

The top 16 men’s and women’s teams in each bow division will be selected using the combined top three scores from the Individual Qualification Round. All members of a team must be of the same gender, same bow division and from the same club/province.

The Team Elimination Rounds are shot simultaneously as a series of matches. For Recurve, each match consists of up to x4 ends of x6 arrows (two per athlete – each team member shoots 2 arrows per end (2 arrows x 3 archers x 4 ends = 24 arrows) shot according to the set system with 2 points for a win, x1 each for a draw and 0 for a loss. For Compound, it is the cumulative total of x4 ends of x6 arrows (two per athlete – each team member shoots 2 arrows per end (2 arrows x 3 archers x 4 ends = 24 arrows) that determines the winner. All 3 archers on a team will be required to finish shooting before the prescribed time limit (2 minutes).

The Finals Round starts with the quarter-final competition with the losers of the semi-finals shooting for the Bronze and the winners for the Gold and Silver Medals. These matches are shot in individual butts, alternating shooting per team. The archers may shoot in any sequence but may shoot only 1 arrow each time they are on the shooting line during alternating competition, with timing started and stopped when the athlete crosses the 1m line.

The Mixed Team Round is formed by teams composed of the top ranked man and the top ranked woman (from the same Member Federation), seeded according to their positions as determined by their total score in the Qualification Round. They shoot simultaneously in a series of matches, each match consisting of four ends of four arrows (two per athlete) to determine a winner by total cumulative score.

Points to note:

A team shall consist of the highest ranked three (or two if a Mixed Team) athletes from the Qualification Round unless the Team Manager notifies the Director of Shooting or the Chairman of Judges in writing at least one hour before the start of that round of competition of a substitution of another athlete who competed in the Qualification Round.

A violation of the foregoing will result in disqualification of the team. In case of substitution medals shall only be awarded to the athletes that shot the Team round, not the qualification round.
